Has Ryan real Tattooes?? Where?? What does they mean?
This is what you asked me the most. Few times I've posted pics with a little explanation on my Facebook and Tumbrl pages.
But maybe it's time to open a REAL POST here so you can easily find the answers
Though I'm not a fan of tattooed man, I have to say that I "like" Ryan's because they are quite hidden.. I mean he is not like Luke (in The Place Beyond The Pines) that has all his body marked.
First let me tell you what Ryan himself has said about tattoos:
"A tattoo should never be meaningful, because at a certain point you’re going to hate it, and it might as well make you laugh."
First Tattoo -- The Giving Tree
In opposite of what he said, this tattoo has a meaning. When he was a child, Donna (Ryan's mom for those who don't know who she is) used to read to him and his older sister the book "The Giving Tree". Maybe it's for Ryan a reminder of his happy childood. Don't forget his parents got divorced when he was about 11 and he had to grow up earlier (as he said in few interviews, at 11 he was the one who provided to mom and sister).
So, he got tattooed on his left arm the cover of the book but while at Cannes in 2010 (for Blue Valentine) Ryan gave an interview with Vulture and said his thought about the book:
"That book is so f***ed up; that story’s the worst. I mean, at the end the tree is a stump and the old guy just sitting on him #8212; he’s just used him to death, and you’re supposed to want to be the tree? F*** you. You be the tree. I don’t want to be the tree"
The book follows the lives of a female apple tree and a male human who are able to communicate with each other; the tree addresses the human as "Boy" his entire life. In his childhood, the boy enjoys playing with the tree, climbing her trunk, swinging from her branches, and eating her apples. However, as time passes he starts to make requests of the tree.
After entering adolescence, the boy wants money; the tree suggests that he pick and sell her apples, which he does. After reaching adulthood, the boy wants a house; the tree suggests he cut her branches to build a house, which he does. After reaching middle age, the boy wants a boat; the tree suggests he cut her trunk to make a boat, which he does, leaving only a stump.
In the final pages, the boy (now a shriveled old man) wants only "a quiet place to sit and rest," which the stump provides. The story ends with the sentence "And the tree was happy."
Second Tattoo -- The Ghostly Lady and the Skeleton
This is the hardest to see as it's in his left inner arm.
It represents a Ghostly Lady with a Skeleton.. So, are we sure he has no meaning too dear Ryan??
We all know how much you love skeletons and ghosts.
Seriously, the lady is a real person; her name was Theda Bara and she was a famous actress in the silent era. She played in more than 40 movies between 1914 and 1926.
So maybe Ryan saw few of her movies and fell in love with her.
I don't remember I've ever read an article where he explains the reason of his choice.
Third Tattoo -- A cactus?? No no.. It's a hand...
Read what he said about it:
"One of my tattoos is supposed to be a monster's hand dropping a bloody heart but I did it myself with a tattoo kit so it looks like a cactus"
So, it's a selfmaded tattoo.. But honestly it's not so bad.. and it's an original one. None have a tattoo like his!
As for the letters next the cactus.... W.H.R??
Easy! Werewolf Heart Records! That is the label for Dead Man's Bones first album.
Fourth Tattoo -- A barcode or what?
GosAdd, this tattoo was made, once again, by Ryan himself.
He did it in 2007 and here it's an excerpet from an article appeared on the Guardian
"At one point, glancing at his hand, I see what I think must be a fading ink stamp, and ask if he was at a club the night before. “Oh no,” he laughs, “that’s a homemade tattoo”. He has many, apparently, all of them “ridiculous”. “A tattoo should never be meaningful,” he explains, “because at a certain point you’re going to hate it, and it might as well make you laugh.”
So Ryan has 4 real tattoos (hope they won't increase!!!)
In few of his movies (Gangster Squad, Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines) you can see others tattoos on him but they're just fake. Temporary tattoos.
You can clearly see the Monster's Hand and the Barcode (or what it is!) but.... Look at how they disguised The Giving Tree one....
That's all GosAdd.
Hope you will like the post.
